Some friends of mine back east are talking about putting a little WSOP trip together, so there's a good chance I'll be heading out there at some point....

I'm in this same boat. It all depends on how things fall this year with taxes (the joys of my wife's new job).

I can get a room for June 3-10 for $120 right now at harrahs and with flight on SW it would come to $300 solo or about $230 a person with 2 people flight an hotel. with another total rewards member I could probably get the room comped for every day by calling the hotel and talking to a casino host. I am in no rush to book right now not sure exactly when I am planning on going during the WSOP.

We are planning to go for Memorial Day weekend - got a room at the Rio for approximately $100 a night. We plan on playing the $1,000 first event and then the $1,500 event right after....plus we may go back June 17th so John can play the seniors event (NO teasing that he is now over 50 and can play that...lol) and I can play one more $1,500 event...
FYI on our tentative plans...

Hard to beat that price Steve. I'm definately interested in trying something like that. Not sure I could get away for the full week, but something like the 3rd through 8th would be fine. When I went last year I was getting my best prices for a Monday-Friday trip since I didn't have to worry about weekend rates.
I just need to start trying to convince my wife to let me disappear for a week...
BTW, I am a Total Rewards Member.

I'm not.....not when I can take a flight and 90 minutes later (ok, exaggeration, but certainly within 3 hours!) be checking into my hotel. I've driven to Vegas before and I'm not a fan......
Regardless, I'm interested in splitting the cost of a hotel room if schedules work out. Paul, Cheryl and I did 2 years ago and it was nice to cut costs on the trip!

$150 for a round-trip ticket isn't even close to break-even for driving if you just count for gas alone. Even in my car at ~30mpg (approx $35 per fill-up) I'd be looking at 3 tanks each way (~$210). I'd rather fly and save 10 hours of my day. Only thing that makes driving affordable is when you can get 2-3 people together and do it, but my time is still worth alot more than the savings for even 4 guys carpooling.
Last time I drove (summer of 1998), it took me 12 hours to get there. Very miserable drive. Unless you're moving there or have an RV and a place to park it, I wouldn't even consider driving.

Just playing on the Bally's website, the Mon-Fri rates for the south tower are $40/night. On orbitz, you can fly Frontier for $170 per person. I don't have any credits on my total rewards card, so getting anything comped on my account would be hard.
Wife and I did a similar trip last year for about the same price.

For the trip the wife and I are going on in March was comped all but one night. That night was at a reduced rate of $45. 5 night for $45 bucks is pretty good. I got it through my Total Rewards account, which has no points either. That is for the Flamingo.
As for driving vs. flying, Flying is the only way to go. We drove once back in 2002ish I think. Never again. Thought we were saving money, but as other Keith pointed out, the gas was more than the air fare. This upcoming trip, we are flying into Phoenix to drop the kiddo off at the grandparents, and we talked about renting a car and driving the 5 hours to Vegas. By the time we paid for a week rental car and gas, we were more than double the cost of the $318 round trip tickets to fly. Plus we have more time in Vegas baby!

Another thing to consider is the fact that my little car is not very comfortable for more than 2 adults. My 3 yr old in her car seat barely fits behind me. Would you want to sit there for 12 hours in a space smaller than an airplane seat?
That being said, you'd have to drive either a large sedan or a mid- to large-suv. Larger vehicle usually equals more for gas. My wife's Jeep Commander (slightly bigger than a Grand Cherokee, w/ seats for 7), with a small V6 still costs $50 to fill and we'd be lucky to get there on 3 tanks.
