man - could he have run into AA more than once then on his way out?

THAT would be crazy!
Huge pot just now involving Johnny Chan and Robert Pisano. A preflop raising war put Pisano all in for 2.19 million, and left Chan with about 800,000 behind. The hands?
Chan {K-Hearts}{K-Clubs}
Pisano {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}
No king came for Chan, as the dealer delivered the community cards thusly: {4-Diamonds}{10-Diamonds}{5-Spades}{7-Clubs}{4-Hearts}. No wonder Chan's card didn't come -- two different players said they had folded kings!
Then about 1 hour later after he steamed off some more chips.
The table folded around to Johnny Chan in the cutoff seat, and he moved all in for his last 550,000 chips. Jonathan Driscoll snap-called on the button, the blinds folded, and the cards were on their backs with the two-time World Champion at risk:
Chan: {J-Spades} {J-Diamonds}
Driscoll: {A-Clubs} {A-Spades}
It was kings into aces that took most of Chan's hard-earned chips this afternoon, and now he was drawing to another two-outer, this time for his tournament life. The dealer failed to provide any help for Chan on board this time either; it came {3-Spades} {6-Clubs} {7-Diamonds} {5-Hearts} {7-Hearts}.
He open jammed for 27.5bb. Even at a table of really shitty players the calling range beats the hell out of you.
That's what he gets for backing Jamie Gold.
